• Environmental Progress is working with our friends and allies in Taiwan to save and re-start its nuclear plants.

  • On Monday, October 23, 2017, EP and the world's leading environmental scientists and energy experts sent an open letter (致蔡英文總統公開信中文翻譯) to Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen urging her to reconsider that nation's nuclear phase-out.

• Taiwan imports over 97 percent of its energy from abroad, with 90 percent constituted of oil, coal, and natural gas in 2015. Nuclear power accounted for 13 percent of its electricity in 2016.

• Offshore wind will produce only a fraction of the energy generated by nuclear, despite its multi-billion dollar price tag.

• If Taiwan phases out its nuclear by 2025, electricity prices will increase by at least 10 percent assuming that fuel prices remain steady.

• Today, two of Taiwan's six operable nuclear reactors are shuttered due to local and national political opposition, representing more than 1.5 GW of lost capacity.
