Almost all of Switzerland’s electricity comes from hydroelectric dams and the country’s five nuclear reactors, which on their own account for 40 percent of its electricity mix.
Electricity consumption in Switzerland has grown at about 2 percent per year since 1980, and continues to grow today.
In 2011 and again in 2017, Parliament mandated not to replace any of the country’s reactors, meaning that nuclear will be phased out gradually in the coming years.
There are no future plans to construct new nuclear reactors, and the country annually imports a significant amount of electricity from neighboring France, Germany, and Austria.
